reverse light hell
hi i have been trying to find out why my reverse lights don't work. i've found what i thinks is where the wires should go on the gear box but can't found the wires can any body help. according to the haynes manual the plug is the consumption indicator. also how do i know if i have an eco-meter

Assuming you have a GTI, you should have an eco meter. Its in the middle of the instrument binnacle and will 'kick in' once you change into 5th gear. If you have the 1600cc GTI, not sure if they had one, but all 1800 GTIs do.
OK, assuming you have one (eco meter), locate the gearbox. On top of that is a 'plug' from which there are wires running to (1) the reversing lights (2) the eco meter. If neither your lights or your eco meter work, then you have an issue with the plug. A new plug can be bought from German, Swedisd and French for about ?14.
Some people have found that the plug from GSF is wired slightly differently to the socket on the gearbox - there are links on here that explain what to do - bit fiddly, but hopefully you'll be lucky like me and it will be a straight swap.
