Red Battery Light Just Came On :( help!

Drove to rescue family from the pub on the way down there (bout 2 miles) my battery light (red light) came on.

Now if i am sitting driving the car, straight ahead of me in the front right of the engine i can hear an immense squeeling for awhile now.

I know this is because the fan belt desperately needs replacing but havnt got round to it, i've got a new one and will fit it first thing tomorrow morning.

Now.. i know my car hasnt been charging properly because the fan belt has been slipping (causing the squeeling), i take it that my fan belt has either completely gone, snapped or is just plain not charging the battery?

Just want to check as im not 100% sure..

On my caddy the red light was getting brighter the more i revved and i just tightened the belt up and the light went off and started charging the battery again.

Yeh it's sorted, the fan belt was knackered had like only 3 or 4 teeth left around the whole belt!

Gave it a charge over night, starts fantastically now

Sorry to hijack, but when I start up first thing in the morning the battery light remains on until I rev the engine a bit.  It hasn't been squealing or anything.. is this normal?

yes - as the diode pack needs a certain voltage to kick in

Hi my battery light is also staying on, went out for a 5-6 mile drive tonight reving a bit trying to get it to go out again, but it won't :dontknow:

on the way home (luckily i was close) my dash lights went dim, the stereo cut out and the headlights were almost non existent also the car is joulting when reving up through the gears

does it mean my alternator has had it or maybe just a loose conection? any help or pointers before i have a good look at it?

Well your alternator is not charging - could be a broken wire, the alternator diode pack or the alternator itself.

I have good used and new alternators.
