Thanks guys, Its 1983 GTI, not sure exactly what engine, though i know it has the early shim tappets.
I have power to the coil,  but its weird cause when the car wont start if i pull off the 12v supply to the coil then re- attach i can see the coil lead spark again & here the pump prime, its almost like it's re setting?
 Any more help please

points towards a faulty hall sender or spark control unit id say :)

check all the wiring between the spark unit and the hall sensor too, pull back the rubber boot from the hall plug to make sure its not cracked up where you cant see. look over the loom for any insulating tape, previous bodged repairs always the 1st thing to check for when you have a wiring fault!

My Golf is up & running.................................

Big thanks to all who bothered to email me about my dodgy running  Golf, after 2 years of restoration it developed an annoying stop start problem, which had me stuffed.
The hall sensor in the dizzy had decided to stop as and start as and when it wanted, it nearly sent  me crazy, in the end its a £30 fix, so dont give up on your classics kids.
