You got a duff alternator or a short ciruit somewhere?
The alternator you should be able to test by putting a voltmeter accross it with the engine running, think it's supposed to put out 13 or 14V. Haynes manual should have more on this test.

Found this for a camper but you get the drift!
Short circuits need some logical searching. Remove battery earth lead then move it towards the battery post and it will probably spark. Remove the fuse for clock and try again, still sparking? got an alarm? remove the fuse and try again.
Basically things like clocks and alarms are always live, everything else pretty much be off when the ignition is off, so if you have a spark that shows there is still a circuit somehere. If you keep removing fuses you will find where the short is.

Are you using a 16A fuse for the fuel pump?
Also, did you replace the starter motor with a standard Mk1 jobbie?

The live wire on fuel pump was touching. All been sorted now.
My new problem is that the battery light flickers.
I have changed my battery and alternator.
Any ideas?
Thnx
