New alternator required - what amperage?

Hi all

The alternator is knackered even though it was a recon fitted 18 months ago but it sat around and didnt run much at all.

I`ve seen that there are two types, 65amp and 90 amp on GSF both for 1.8 8v carb engine.

I assume the 65 amp is the one but I am now not sure so any advice I`d be grateful.

Go for the 65amp, unless you plan on putting a really big sound system in :)

Thanks, I never thought about it until I saw the two types available and wondered if it would overcharge the battery or something.

65 amp it is then  8)

Sound system??????? I`m old enough to remember 45`s and it makes the turntable jump when I hit a bump  8O

OEM fitment is 45 Amp for the GTi

Sorry to nick the thread, but I'm just about to replace my alternator as well, since the charge light intermittently comes on, and I've noticed that the temperature and fuel gauges both run lower than normal - is this connected to a dwindling charge?

And before anyone says it, yes I know the fuel gauge reading reduces as you use it…

I am told its a 1.8 8v from a Driver but it has a Weber carb and 6 bolt 2 into 1 exhaust manifold??    :dontknow:

Amps x Volts = Watts

Think of all the ancillory items you have, rear heater, main heater blower fan, rad fan, front fogs/driving lights.

45amps will probably be enough, 65 amp is better, and pick a battery to match.
