MOT question regarding the horn...
Hi all!
It's nearly the dreaded MOT time and apart from some headlight issues the only worry I've got is my horn switch. At some point there has been a problem with the switch on the steering wheel and instead of the owner fixing it they've wired up a toggle switch for the horn and placed it in the dash, just to the right of the steering column. Is this MOT passable??

Yes it'll pass with this done. I have done it myself, the rear demister on my series 1 doesn't work so i've put the horn through that switch instead.
All i did was to tell the mot station that the horn was on this switch, even had a postit on the button saying 'press for horn'

The earth return for the horn relies on the steering column (the rotating part) being earthed. It seems really unlikely that it wouldn't be, but when my horn packed up that was the problem. So from time to time it wouldn't work. Fixed it by a clip and wire attached to the column below the fixed tube….a few turns round the column like a spring so it could wind up and unwind and earthed the other end to the body at the column fixing.
I guess the grease or what ever in the rack was the problem…..I expect there is some VW way the column gets earth but I couldn't figure it.
Keep smiling, J.
