Main Beam Flasher Problem !!

Hi I have just joined the club as I have a 1990 Clipper Cabrio with a variety of probs that I am sorting slowly!! This one is that my high beam flasher only works when the headlights are on but when the lights are switched off they dont flash. Has anyone else experienced this ?? :banghead: Thanks  Dave

Yeap, first thing I would try is to replace the washer stalk, the stalk you pull for flash,  clips into the back of the washer stalk. Image below just to show I aint pulling your leg.

by the way welcome to the site, perhaps introduce yourself on the new newbies section, everyone likes piccies. :D

More than likely its you headlight switch the one on the right with the wheel thing I would think.

Ok. but my headlights inc side lights work fine on the switch and the flasher works fine using the stalk with the headlights on.It just doesn't without the lights on.

Hmm my mistake it doesnt go through headlight switch at all, just the stalk.

Check pin 30 (red/yellow) & Pin 56 (white/black) on the flasher connector.

Pin 30 should have 12v all the time
Pin 56 +12v when the ignition is on

It could be some sort of ignition switch problem even, you say you have other faults, what are they, any electrical ones?

as above, check pin 30 on the stalks, it should be permanent 12v.  this is what allows you to flash with the lights off, what year is your car?

its an '89 cabby.

do i need to dissassemble the steering column? or is it easy to remove the stalks??

Also you mention Washer stalk…do you mean indicator stalk? i thought the flasher was on indicators?

Thanks

wheel off, remove plastic ign lock shroud then stalks held on with 3 screws. the flasher switch is on the washer stalk, what it is is the indi stalk has a clip which locates into the switch. You'll see when you take it off :)
