Main Beam Fault

i dont drive the golf that often, but driving it the other night i became a bit concerned.
whenever i switched the main beam on, all of the exterior lights went out! the dash stayed lit up. i recall the guy who sold it to us saying that there was some sort of headlight upgrade fitted, so i dont want to go messing about with it to much at the mo. so your help is much appreciated.
