Going to fit an alarm/CL..
It doesn't have any security though! I'd like to fit it with an alarm system with immobiliser and central locking. The car is a 5 door with no central locking currently..
It seems from research people generally just go for Ebay central locking kits. If I bought one of these and fitted it myself, then got an alarm system (for example Toad ai606) would they be able to use the Ebay CL kit with the Toad?
Seconly, the engine is currently a 1.5 carb and I'll be upgrading it to a mk2 16 KR engine next year.. Will this cause problems with the alarm or will I not need to touch the alarm when installing the new engine?
Thanks in advance! I'm sure I'll be asking a lot more questions once I get my hands on the car..

you dont need to touch the engine side of things when doing an alarm so youre alright there too… should be easy as on a mk1, just make sure all the switches work, on the doors and interior light etc…

If so, I'll look into buying and fitting one of those then! Security is top of my priorities.. especially with it being an old and very easy to break into car!

hardest part of fitting these kits is getting the wiring into the doors, my cabby only had really tiny wiring holes in the shell. this was a real pain for me as i fitted electric windows, so in the end i took a holesaw to it so i could use nice big MK2 Golf cable tubey thingies.
Nice technical term from rubjonny there cable tubey thingies..
I guess I'll find out how much room I've got when I get to it. I'm wanting to fit leccy windows in a year or so anyway.
Can't wait to get the car! It's this one: http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=71569
Are there any alarms people would recommend? I'm after spending a max of ?250 including fitting

if youre feeling brave try fit the alarm yourself… i dont think youll be able to get official thatchman approval for your insurance (as youre not an approved fitter) but it should save you some monies and itll help you get to know youre car better

i got a cl kit off ebay from 'rightclick' this one comes with MK4 tyle flip keys (if you want, theres loads of different styles) this one also does boot pop and total closure if you have an electric window loom that has this feature (corrado/cabrio 1 touch loom for example)
very good quality bit of kit too, I've bought loads of cl kits over the years and this one is the best one so far. clicky:

how do the kits fit?
im just wondering as i am looking for one of these but i dont have any door pins as there missing

if you only have the 1 pin you need to attach the cl motor to the door lock pin pin, or if this is missing just use the hole. If it has 2 holes attach cl motor to the unused hole.
you may find the included cl pins are too short, if so you can use bits of metal coathanger to make up the length.

I've taken the door cards and I'm confused. I just don't understand where the id connect the little block thing to. The poles for the front doors are very short and are up behind metal (so could never get a screwdriver up there!)
The rear doors have long poles but theyre horizontal rather than vertical!
I thought it'd be much easier than this..
Anyone got a picture or diagram of how I can hook them up to the locks?

I understand how the rods work, etc. but how do I get into the car's rod to attach the CL rod to it? It's behind the door metal? I wish I had a car I could go and look at to see how they've done it!
So for the rear doors I just bolt the actuator horizontally as well?
I've got one more door card to get off.. the screw holding the window winder in is MASHED and stupidly tight!! Nothing will grip so looks like it's getting drilled out.. *sigh*

Try and have the actuators mounted as vertically as possible, and situated as level as possible with the interior knobs (ie, straight underneath or near as you can). This will mean they can push/pull easier. You may have to make a bracket up (or use perforated strip) on the rear doors to get them levelish (?) Not sure as have only ever done fronts.
Good luck with it !
