Could be a few things
My money is on a split ribbon cable for the instruments….they tend to get snagged on the dashboard metalwork by kak-handed tinkerers
If not, maybe the regulator on the instruments has blown….how competent are you with electrics ?

Fuel could be due to a faulty sender. This is dead easy to replace. Just lift the rear seats and there is a black cover held on with 3 screws. Take this off and the sender is on top of the tank. Simply replace.
Worth checking that everything is plugged into the back of the instrument cluster. When i took my dash off I forgot to push the main connector back in and had not RPM. Easy fix for me though.
If that fails, maybe new clocks, or change the individual senders.

STOP!!!
Before you do loads of checks, look under the bonnet at the rocker cover. As you look at it locate the right hand side, then the rear right securing bolt and there SHOULD be a brown earth wire attached to it.
If not then it may have dropped off/ not been put back on after work in the 'bay. Reattach it and the problem MAY be solved. The wire sorts lots of problems out and it should be a first for issues like the ones you describe.

errrr…. the words touch and barge pole spring to mind…… very errrr… 'enthusiastically' fitted It looks like they have cut out some of the bulkhead and fitted the fuel pump in the scuttle? All the scotch locks and crimp connectors don't give the impression of a job well done with long term reliability in mind.
Looks like a later cabrio engine or Scirocco? engine that had extra gubbins to make it start and tickover better than the orginal GTI version.
The one on the top of radiator expansion bottle is to tell you when water is low. The one infront of the cylinder head is a thermo time switch, the one in front of that (not circled) is for the water temp.
One of the other arrows points at what looks like a DIY brake pipe?
There should be a connector on the blue thing on the the left hand side, and also the warmup thingy under the radiator hose with teh two fuel lines going to it. Some of the vacuum and breather hoses look like they have been blocked off or left open :dontknow:
Does it start and run :dontknow:

1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet
The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Yeah it starts and runs great lol the guy i bought it from was a mechanic
theres also another thing he said theres 2 fuel pumps
(one in the tank disconnected )
theres one in the engine bay is working fine
only thing is that you need to press the gas Very slightly when starting the engine
soooo ? how to get the RPM / temp / petrol gauge working ?
