fuel pump again
Hi,
I'm hving trouble with my fuel pump and i hope you can help.
The fuel pump will not turn on unless i bridge a piece of wire where the relay should be.
I've got a new fuel pump fitted, ive tried new relays, new dash loom, it has a new fuse box, new ignition switch and there is no brakes in the wires.
Can anyone help?
Cheers.

The triggering for the relay is not working. The two pins your not bridging, one should be to earth and the other is +12V when the ignition is on. Can you use a multimeter?

OK so the relay should have the two contacts you are bridging to get the pump to run. These two obviously are wired up correctly. On the relay there will be another two pins, these are for the coil part of the relay (the bit that actually closes the circuit on the first two pins allowing the pump to operate) now one of these pins should be connected to earth, so check the resistance to an earth point and it should be a few earths. The other pin will be +12V when the pump is required to operate (for example on the last click of the key before it turns the starter) so set your meter up to check for +12V there and then turn the key whilst looking at the meter. Now your hoping its the earth pin as thats alot easier to sort. If its the +12V then your going to have to start looking at the triggering cct. Do that and then come back with the results mate

err the fuel pump relay has five pins ??????!!!!!
The little dinky one is the one that comes from the coil to trigger it, it is same pulse as rev counter needs, if you fit a normal headlamp relay in where the fuel pump relay is then you will be able to narrow the fault down one more step as with the standard 4 pin relay it should come on with the ignition circuit, my first guess would be faulty relay as they are a common failure but as you say you have checked it then there can only be the trigger circuit which is most likely a broken wire at the coil HTH!

Hi, i had a quick look just now. I put multi meter to the bottom left pin and there was 12v+ and the top right pin had nothing so i assume this to be the earth. The larger pin to the left has no V and the one to the right has 12v. Is this what you mean?

just a quick question?
How many pins should be on a fuel pump relay and what number is it?
I've got loads of relays and i've tried them all but the main one i use is the relay with number 2 written on it and there are only 5 pins. The fuse box has more holes thank the relay

yes 5 pins mate, the fusebox always has more holes than you use. Just apply what I said about the other pins, out of the three one should be an earth then the other two will be live when the pump is required to be on. Unfortunately I haven't got my haynes with me, I could tell you for sure then what pins are for what
