Fog light problem

I failed my mot on this :banghead:

My near side is working fine, the offside is out.
changed the lamps, no good.
pull off both looms and checked for corrosion seems fine.
the offside loom has one less terminal than the right :dontknow:
is this the norm? if not I cant see how it would have just disappeared. :dontknow:
please help
cheers

Wow, that's hash. If I needed to get throught the mot urgently, I'd remove both fog lights and take it back. They can't fail you if they aren't there, they would have to pass you! (fog lights are not a legal requirement on the front, only the back). You can then take your time fixing the issue.

Just a thought.

If nobody else comes to the rescue, I'll have a look through my manual and see if I can come up with an answer.

Ahh, I'll start again then. I'll stand corrected but I was under the impression that you only needed one rear fog light. I was also under the impression that it was standard practice to fit only ONE fog light at the rear. This reduced the chances of it being confused with brake lights. Check out a modern car and see if I'm wrong!

As for fixing the issue, have you looked for broken wires? Have you tried the bulb you know to be good in the broken fitting? Are all other lights in that cluster working okay? Look for a broken earth connection and if none of that helps I'll look at my pdf manual.

I think you are right, but if there is just one, it should be on the offside or centre, not just the nearside.

AFAIK, from when I last changed a mk1 loom (long time ago) the off side foglight is just an extenstion in the wires from the nearside, in theory with the fault being on the offside, tracing a fault should be easier.  As Tian says it must be in the wires/connections/bulb/bulb holder somewhere across the back of the car between the two bulbs.  You could always try continuity testing for breaks somewhere along the line.

Yes, although the wiring is there I dont think the near side cluster has the reflective bit :dontknow:

Mine failed a MOT 2 years a go with both rear fogs being too dim. After some consultation on here it was decided it should only have one, so I removed the nearside one and the remaining one shone much brighter.

The previous garage I'd used never noticed.

Try just getting the offside one to work.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.
