Fit new cluster(Help please)
I recently bought a 1981 Mk 1 and replace the fuse box and cluster. The new cluster is equiped with a rev counter. So no wire from coil. I've traced the red and black from the cluster(No 5 on pin) to the fuse box, but where do I connect the wire from the coil on the fuse box?

I'm presuming your talking about the 'ballast resistor'
Anyway it goes o the negative side on the ignition coil,

Yes, What I have done is to check at the back of the circuit where the rev counter is mounted. There is three connecting pins. One for + one for - and then a connection from the coil. It is working from the + of the coil and not the negative.

Not sure exactly what your saying but the circuit is
Ignition coil (under the bonnet) Negative terminal -> socket behind dash.
The ballast resistor goes to the positive side of the coil, and doesnt control the rev counter.
The rev counter action is created by the switching of the negative side on and off.
Which model/engine of car are we talking about?

Sorry for that…It is the neg from coil. But where do I find the connection on the fuse box? or do I connect straight from coil to socket on cluster?

The negative coil I believe goes straight from the negative on the coil to the socket on the dash, but just to make sure I'll get my 1300cc books out later (when I get back from work) and check for you.

Thanx it do work like that but yet another problem. The oil light is flashing and the oil buzzer sounds after about 3 kilometers

Ok, problem solved. Just connect the wire from the coil directly on to the back of the cluster where the 3 pins from the rev counter come out on the circuit board. Not on the pin socket in the loom.

Sounds like the PCB on the back of the cluster is damaged then, is it working ok then now?
