Electrical guru needed

Eh up, I've been trying to sort out a horn problem for a few days got 12v at steering wheel, 12v at horn, relay fine and fuse fine. So I made up a piece of wire with a male spade connector on the end and tried some continuity testing and found no circuit on the negative (brown) side from the horn to the relay so it looks like a break in the wire. Does anybody know which connector on the back of the fuse box it comes in on or exactly which wire it is there looks to be alot of brown one's there and with poor access behind the fuse box I dont really want to pull them all off cos there is a good chance something else will not work when I put it back together.
  Cheers Stu

Does the horn work it connected direct to the battery? In the past on MK1s (or Jettas etc) I've had it were the horn will work when the engine is running but not with just the ignition on.

On my GTI the horn used to work only when it wanted and failed the MOT, I found that although the horn worked when tested direct to a battery it wouldn't work via the cars wiring. They seem pretty sensitive to voltage/current drop caused by 25 year old wiring. A different horn works fine :dontknow: On GTis they sometimes work if only one not both are connected.

Remember that VW horns are also wired up differently from the norm, most are earthed to the body and the switch connects +12v. On VWs the switch earths the horn hence the need for 2 wires at the horn, +12v and the switched earth. Try testing your earth and pressing the horn switch.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Horn works fine straight off battery and there is 12v at the spade connectors at the horn, I'll try disconnecting one and see what happens. How do I check my earth? the voltage at the wheel drops to zero if I press the horn button making the circuit :banghead:

Ye you were right steering column earth lead looks OK but not working right. I put a temp one one and just like that the horns work, I'll now have to spend the rest of the day putting all the dash back together.

Cheers :cheer:
