Electrical Gremlins!

I have just got my golf out of the garage after nearly three years and after starting it decided to check the electrics.
Here are some of the gremlins I have.
When I go to put main beam on there is no Clicking noise or dash warning light and there is no main beam!..Does this mean the relay is :dontknow:  kaput?.Also when I operate the main beam the drivers side light goes onto sidelight only!! :dontknow:
Also the indicators and hazards when operated flash slow and dim!
This to me looks like a bad earth but I just wanted to tap into the forums knowledge so that I don't go barking up the wrong tree!
Cheers
Sean

Head light issue is probably the bulb, as the full beam and dipped normally run off different filaments. As for the indicators that sounds like it could be the relay. Is the battery fully charged? and like you said are all the earths okay?

Your always going to get these niggly little faults with electrics after somethings been standing for a while its just a case of ironing them all out!

Well, after reading through many posts on the electrical forum I thought I would put some of the new found knowledge into practise.
I started with cleaning and renewing all the earth connections. Then I checked the fuses and cleaned up the spades. After a check of the relays and a bit of swapping about we had success. All the lights, indicaters work, the only thing still to sort is the horn and one of the rear fog lights. Will have to read up more about the horn in the forum but with the rear fog I think I will try shortening the connecting wire between the two(shouldn't be that long surely!)
Once a replacement light switch is fitted(the old one is a bit suspect) and the new rear brake pressure regulator we will be closer to mot time!  8O

i have done much research on the bleeding horns on these things and heres a few things to check

Check first if you have 12v on the black on yellow wire at the horn with the ignition on,
if you do you need to find the black on brown wire at the steering column were it runs into the combi switch
and earth the wire and see if the horn works if it doesn't then there is a break in the black on brown wire to the horn
or the connections need taking off and cleaning up
if it does then you have a faulty horn plate or a faulty earth wire to the steering column/rack
