digital dash bit

the small digital piece on my wifes 83 golf hasnt worked since we got it. so how can i get it to work, i havent even looked at it yet. so i dont even know what it does. and what is the little switch in the top right for marked with position 1 & 2 on it.
seems i only seem to post in the technical problems area, now about to post about the lighting problem we are having.

The digital display is for the MFA which is a small computer that tells you an number of things. These can go wrong.. often!!

In position 1 the following are displayed when you press the button on the end of the stalk.
1. driving time at present (will reset to zero after 2 hours when stationary)
2. distance travelled at present (as above)
3. average speed (as above)
4. miles per gallon (as above)
5. oil temperature
6. outside temperature

In position 2 the following are displayed
1. overall driving time until reset or passes the maximum display
2. distance travelled
3. average speed over all journeys
4. miles per gallon over all journeys
5. oil temperature
6. outside temperature

The button in the top right is to select the different displays. To reset the displays simply pull the stalk out towards you to get 000 readings in either position. If you want a total reset you will have to pull out in both positions.

Search the Archive Electrics section loads been asked over the years on MFA problems . Complicated and can get expensive for parts .
