Crazy MPG??

I have looked through some of the other posts to no avail, basically my MPG is usually around the high 70's (ha ha :lol: ) - so im thinking there must be an electrical connection that tells this unit how much fuel is pushing through and then calculate this with the average MPH or something like that??

Anyone have any ideas if there is a kind of metering head for this??

Cheers
Mark.

Ha! another one! Hard luck mate :( A solution may be coming along soon though… The cause is probably the same as the 99mpg one.

see this thread and other ones like it (do a search)

siiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh we're getting there.

If your MPG is on the high side (but does vary in proportion to your driving/choice of radio station) it could be;

  • Speed sensor in the speedo is on the way out (it's a hall sensor costing ?45 odd from VW - a second-hand item in a MK1 or MK2 dash that works might fix it)

  • Vacuum sensor on the back of the clocks isn't reading properly - if you're lucky this is because you have a leaky vacuum pipe, if not, it may be because the sensor is dying - in which case you'll be in the same pickle barrel as myself and Michael

We're trying to install a second hand working sensor in place of a non-functioning original version.

The rub being that every time you want to try something you have to take the dash out…. which tends to pretty much halt all other weekend activity for at least half a day….

and of course VW no longer make the original version ….or more accurately (and more distressingly) the company that used to make the sensors no longer exists.

How we laughed when we found that out

could the fact that my vacuum hose is missing to my distributor have anything to do with my 70mpg trips? i.e. is the mfa mpg meter run by vacuum?

My MFA also displays between 16 and 21 MPG, however, I'm currently stripping the engine bay out and found that my vacum pipe isn't attached to anything on the engine.  Where is it meant ot fit?

Vacuum pipe on mine is fitted to the one way valve thingy on the servo pipe - betwwen servo/ manifold/warm up valve. Other vacuum pipe is from rear of throttle body to distributor. Mines an 1800 dx, but I'm in the 99mpg club…so am waiting for divine intervention to solve my mpg problem….fitted central locking this weekend, new brake pipes and cylinders last week, gearbox the week before, and exhaust week before that….used to have a social life, then I got another Mk1!!!!
MPG reading would be really nice, but other things keep getting in the way!
