The oil light flashes all the time - level definately correct as is the wiring thanks to rubjohnny
No digital display on dash (the earth at bottom of steering column is correct and working as the horn works)

That is possibly for the connection to the economy needle/light.

I thought that was just a vacum pipe from the clocks to the inlet mani

Another problem that has just shown itself is that there is no power going to the fuel pump.  I can hear to relay switching but nothing even getting to the fuse.  Ive replaced the relay but no change.  Ideas??

Just an idea, have you dropped the fuse board down and made sure every wire is fully into the board? Only reason for suggesting is I had a fault with reversing lights recently and was really stumped after checking the normal obvious faults, but eventually I  dropped the fuse board down and made sure every wire was fully in and it did solve the problem.
Also you should have an earth off the rocker cover.

I've not tried that so I shall be on with that in an hour or so and report back.

Earth from rocker cover?  Where does this go to as the car didn't have one when I got it

The earth from the rocker cover goes from the coil bracket to the rocker cover bolt on the right hand side of the head at the back.

Sweet. Thanks for that. It definately wasnt there so ill put one there. What issue if any should this resolve as there's only the digi clock, light for clocks that arent working now.

The fuel relay business is a knackered tci unit according to the autoectrician today

What you describe above the main engine earth to chassis covers that.

The earth from the rocker cover goes directly to the MFA via the stalk push button according to the Haynes manual.

That sounds like an explanation for the clock not working

There is another earth for the mfa and pretty much everything else housed in the clocks.
Its description in the haynes manual says "Earth point - bound with insulation tape in dash loom"

I would check that you are getting a good earth to the clocks.

The earth on the rocker cover must be only to change the function on the display.
I can only guess they earthed it on the engine block itself to eliminate any interference or possible earth offsets which may occur when trying to earth elsewhere.
Its probably a delicate instrument and wouldn't take too kindly to having any kind of feed sent up its backside!

It should be a brown wire with a 6mm ring terminal on the end. I think it comes out the loom at the same point as the oil pressure switch in the end of the head but without checking mine I can't be certain.
It is common for the ring terminal to break off and to leave the wire dangling in thin air.

In that case the brown wire you mention is in good condition and currently attached to the coolant outlet on the side of the block.  Just the other one which cant be found  :P

The one mentioned above between the coil bracket and rocker cover?

the earth to the head is also for the dash on mfa cars, the stalk just taps into this earth ;)

the switch above is for the shift light, it should be plumbed inline with the vac hose to the dizzy.

on later cars there is also an additional braided earth from rocker cover to one of the coil mounting bolts, this can only help so you may as well give it a go

None of it made a difference in the little time I had yesterday but ive got all day to look today and try again.  INteresting thing is that the ignition module didnt seem to make too much of a difference but perhaps theres a little too much fuel in there.  Ill take plug out and leave it to dry just to check.

Interesting thing is that the clock still doesnt show but the clocks now light up with the headlight switch - which they didnt before.  Also, when the indicators are switched they work fine but when you put the hazards on - they work but the light on the dash doesnt???

have a look at the clock plug pins next, make sure they're all straight, clean and stickign out enough to make good contact. then check the feeds with a multimeter:
1 - blu/gry - Light switch pin 58b (dash lighting)
2 - brn - Earth
3 - pur/blk - Fusebox pin B/3 (fuel level sender)
4 - blu/yel - Fusebox pin B/7 (coolant temp sensor)
5 - red/blk - Fusebox pin B/19 (rev counter)
6 - red - Fusebox pin B/12 (permanent live)
7 - blu/wht - Fusebox pin A/28 (high beam warning)
8 - brn/wht - MFA switch mode button
9 - yel - Fusebox pin A/4 (high oil pressure warning switch) (blk/blu on early models)
10- brn/red
11- blu/blk - Spade to engine loom behind fusebox on early, Fusebox pin B/15 late (low oil pressure warning warning switch)
12- blu - Fusebox pin A/16 (alternator warning light)
13- blu/red - Fusebox pin A/17 (indicator warning lamp)
14- blk - Ignition switch pin 15 (ignition live feed)

OK I'll start going through them.

New ignition module and still fuel pump doesnt prime and no power going to fuel pump when ignition switched.

Oh and licence plate lights keep blowing fuses just for that added bit of fun (read annoyance)  :P

Rubjonny.  Just tested the plug for the clocks and heres what readings I get;

1. 11.88 (with lights switched on)
2. 0
3. 0.04
4. 0.01
5. 12.37
6. 12.37
7. 10.55
8. 0 (even with pressing button)
9. 0.7
10. No contact in plug
11. 0
12. 0
13. 12.37 (with indicators switched on the reading alternates)
14.12.37

In addition to that, my 8 (MFA) is red/wht.  Then the plug is in the dash, I get a reading of about 5.5 but when I press the button it drops massively

2 should have continuity to ground so check that one, the mode button should be open circuit then have continuity to ground when you press the button

for pump prime not all of them do it, but it should run while cranking. if not try a 17/18 relay in the pump socket that should make the fuel pump come on all the time with the ignition
