clipper headlight loom smoke and melted cables

Post

After getting the golf back on the road, i had to pull over due to large amounts of smoke coming from behind the steering wheel. Ive stripped the dash out and split the loom, there was two black and white cables both run from the right hand light switch and down to a blue plug on the back of the fuse box. The two cables run from the same terminals but go to seperate ends of the plugs, the thicker wire has been jointed with a red through crimp, and the thinner cable (about half the thickness) has burnt out in a few places, luckly hasnt damage the other cables too much.
  1. ive lost the interior lights on the dash but my window and hood ones still light up
  2. ive changed from a quad light set up to a twin and not changed the wiring, cables arnt touching tho
  3. My mate thought my lights went out after going over a pot hole ten mins before the burn out but the lights was still working
  4. Does anyone know what the cable does?ive been trying to make sense of the haynes manuals and stuff online but cant find a diagram for my car but cant find the colour code that matches what ive got
Thanks for any help

1st thing check if you have the dimdip resistor, if you do bin it as this is likely the casue of the loom fire. its about the size of a packet of polos with a yellow wire out of each end, not sure where it is on a cab but think its near scuttle passenger side.  look behind the fusebox for the other ends of the yellow wires and disconnect the plug(s) to stop any voltage going down the wires.

was it from pin 56 on the headlight switch? if so the black/white wires are the dip/main power feed to the flasher switch in the stalk, chop out all the red wire bodgery and crispy bits then fix it up nice. you dont need to run this wire to the fusebox at all, just run it direct to the stalk. the fusebox wire is used for headlight washer system, so unless you have this you can just bin it

hey thanks for the help, its all back together now but ive lost the dashboard lights, something to look into later on, not planning on driving it after dark anyway. the resisto is now out, wasnt down to earth and had a 1 ohm accross it. cant see why the thincable would of burnt out if it didnt go anywhere?had 12v one end and mega ohms the other end.

Dom, regardless of whether you are driving during the day or not you will commit an offence by not having working lights on your vehicle. For your info in case you get stopped/are involved in an accident.

you can just bridge the blue/grey to the green/grey short term, you'll loose the dimmer but who actually dims the dash lights anyway?

but be sure to check the blue/grey wires in the dash for damage, could have been taken out when the other sections melted!
