I've recently been through all this with VW, specialist etc…My advice is;
1. Don't go bigger that 60 Amp
2. Check the condition of your alternator
3. More importantly check the condition of the wire from the Alternator to the Battery - if the wire is old/connections knackered, it's like having a blocked drain - you just won't get tht juice coming through.
Since I've owned my car (12 years), the Voltmeter has never showed more that about 12.5V when engine running - having new loom it now shows 13.4V - which is what it should be. This was AFTER changing alternator and 2 batteries in last 5 years!!
Cheers
