No should be fine. Went to buy a new 45 amp for my GTI and GSF said I might as well have the 55amp as it was the same sort/price and would keep the battery topped up easier.

we have a 70amp mk3 fitted to our mk1, just had to put the mk1 pully on and change the wires to the battey with the mk2 or mk3 version, worth the effort., cheaper than a new one.

Why not fit a 90A one? Common enough in scrapyards.

Check the rating of the wires to the battery.

Upto 500A goes from the battery to the starter, so 90A the other way isn't really a problem. I've had one on mine for over a year and I've got 600W of lighting up front so any issues with the wiring would have appeared by now.

You can use larger battery with alternator, but be careful, as if you go too big, the alternator simply won't be able to charge the battery.

I've recently been through all this with VW, specialist etc…My advice is;

1. Don't go bigger that 60 Amp
2. Check the condition of your alternator
3. More importantly check the condition of the wire from the Alternator to the Battery - if the wire is old/connections knackered, it's like having a blocked drain - you just won't get tht juice coming through.

Since I've owned my car (12 years), the Voltmeter has never showed more that about 12.5V when engine running - having new loom it now shows 13.4V - which is what it should be. This was AFTER changing alternator and 2 batteries in last 5 years!!
