BLOWER (FAN)
hey guys, started mk1 mk1 for the 1st time in over a year yesterday but noticed the fan doesnt come on,
fuse was melted, ive now replaced the fuse but still nothing…
when i change from seting 1, 2, 3 i can clear a click from the resistor pack, like its trying to power the fan…
do u reckon its siezd up over the time??

Almost certainly seized….try removing the plastic water tray and the mesh cover from above the fan housing, and giving it a spin manually to break any corrosion which is stopping it from turning. Aslo try a squirt of WD40 around the bearing area ( although it's hard to get this to go in all the right places without removing the plastic impeller, which can be a pig)
With luck, the fan will now run, at least on the high speed settings, and may work itself looser with time. I always have my fan on speed one, and I'm sure this helps them last longer! (as well as keeping the screen clear!)
good luck and happy Christmas!

Hi, could be burnt out, but I would check that power is getting to the terminals first ( with a meter or 'bulb and wire' circuit tester) - check for all speed settings on switch . If power is getting through, check the motor is earthing - can't remember if this is through the casing of the motor, or more likely through an earth connection.
If still no joy, take the motor out. This is simple, except for getting the thing out of the plenum chamber ( the boxed off section at the rear of the engine compartment) which is a right fiddle, and probably will involve removal of wiper motor (good chance to clean and grease the joints to improve your wipers!).
Then test the motor with a direct feed to and from the battery (careful of sparks/fuel etc). With lots of WD40 into the bearings and lots of spinning by hand, they can sometimes recover, but if no joy, it's time for new motor

If you want a new heater fan - call GSF. I just picked one up from there today - they also sell the switch. GSF part numbers are;
Fan - 93497
Switch - 93495
Cheers

The owners manual with the vehicle recommends (page 39):
The blower should always be running at a slow speed
To prevent contaminated air from getting into the vehicle interior, both levers A and B should be moved into the middle. Vents 3 (fresh air vents) must be closed.
Note also - air flow from Vents 3 (fresh air vents) is at its strongest when levers A and B are pushed inwards to the centre.

Depends on the condition of the one from the scrappie - that may be shagged to. My car is in top condition - so I put on a new fan - guess it depends on the condition of the car!
