Bizzare hooter issue
Car: 1983 Gti Campaign
Never had this one before……
Been looking at the hooter not working issue today.
All wiring, relays, fuses and twin horns in good working order. removed steering wheel and lightly sanded brass and copper contacts. Placed wheel back on column and horn works fine before tightening retaining nut and using hooter buttons on the wheel.
It's just the last turn of the wheel retaining nut, thats when it stops working.
The two contact as the back of the wheel are still in contact, and when I put a key in the back to short the circuit it works fine but not on the buttons.
Please help, it's driving me mad The only thing it needs for mot.

Ok problem solved…..
It was the copper contact within the column assembly, it was fracture just before it goes into the wiring multiplug and when pressure from the retaining nut was applied the fracture opened. Whipped one out of my mk2 gave everything a good clean, re-assembled and hey presto, blasting like a good 'un Fingers crossed for a first time pass again this year
Never seen this before, but one to bear in mind with all the horn issues that have arisen of late.
Cheers.

I have a problem with the steering wheel contact too.
It seems that when the wheel is in the 'straight ahead' position it doesn't sound, turn the wheel slightly and all is well, works perfectly.
Is the brass (?) circular disc worn and is it removeable to turn it round to another position or rven renew?

I found the brass ring was quite worn. After I gave it a sanding to clean it all up, I manipulated the copper contact to give it a better contact with the brass ring. The copper contact had quite a large flat spot on it as did it's replacement.
Worth checking ~ when the steering wheel is refitted, check the contact visually (another one of those hard to get to positions) to make sure it is in the correct allignment. Especially if the brass ring has run out of true, or has a flat spot.

Thanks, are newer cars the same and could I get a replacement? Are they easy to get out or will it snap when I prise out?

This was carried out on my '83. IIRC same year as yours. Had a brief look at the '93 and it looked the same on the surface (except the different size spline) but I didn't dismantle it to any great extent. Certainly the same as pre '89 mk2 which are common for spares.
Was fairly easy to pull out but I would say pull it out as straight as you can without bending it to save it from breaking off.
