Basics of ignition & starter

Hi,
I have only just registered with this forum today, my first post being in the newbie thread.

To cut a long story short, i have taken on a mk1 golf track car project which was half done with a possible engine change??? (PICS TO FOLLOW)

OK, Help question no 1

I tried to turn the car over today see how much i need to do, the battery is fully charged, but when i pushed the start button i had a few clunks, which i thought was starter motor, i took it out - and now get nothing. on further testing i have found i have a constant 12V on the starter motor.
I have tried to chase the wiring, which is from +ve on batt to starter terminal is OK
then other cable goes to an ingnition switch and to a starter button then to the fuse box. (not sure on any thing after this)

Could any one give me the quick run down on things as to elctrical diagram on starter motor side as if it was basics (switch and starter button instead of ignition barrell) my haynes manual is on its way!!!
Thanks in advance

Looks like flat battery to me  :dontknow:

you will have a terminal on your starter motor solenoid (the little cylinder next to the motor) that when made live (12v) will engage the starter motor and spin it up.

This wire will go to your starter button. Another wire from your starter button will either go back to the battery (probably via the fuse box) or to the ignition switch.

When the button is pressed, the 12v will be passed down to the motor solenoid.

You should still have the ign switch in the circuit or some toggle switches somewhere as you will still need these to provide constant 12v to the accesories once the engine is started.

Ta for feedback.

Have had a good look today!
The constant 12V on the starter motor is due to a cable running back to the coolant temp sensor which has been conected to the neg wire of the starter. (not sure why)

I can disconnect this and now get my 12V at starter motor when toggle (Ignition) is ON and starter button is pushed. (which is correct)
The wire goes into the fuse box i persume through a fuse and to neg??? if im correct here does anyone know the fuse and rating so i can re wire this in a seperate fuse box.

Altough the electrics can now be sorted the starter is still not turning, i have also gave it a good hit with hammer with no joy! can i put a mk2 starter in a mk1???

many thanks in advance

Mk2 Starter

The simple answer is yes,you can use a mark2 starter on your Mk1 it has got an extra bolt hole for the Mk2 mount which you don't need but it is a straight fit :D
I have got a Mk2 starter on my car

Im really begining to love this forum,
quick, straight good knowledge.!

(if only i had internet in the garage) !!! LOL

Just thought of another quick question.
On the solonoid there are two smaller spade connections, (the NEGS ?) i have one of these connected to my starter button/ingnition what does the other one get used for?

Solenoid Query

The two small connections on the solenoid,One is the trigger from your ignition key,the other one is in use if you are using a ballist resister in line with the coil, not used if you are using electronic ignition.
Hope this will help

ballist resistor coils are only used without electronic ignition? when you say electronic ingition, define what is and what isn't. ecu controlled? tci controlled? points? obviously all ignition is electronic.

thankyou

I shall have another good look in a bit altough looking at haynes (not mk1 haynes manual)

I have the TCI switch on the heat sink just infront of the windscreen which is connected to the coil, does this mean that i should have 3 connections altogethor on the starter,?

Quality reply, ta very much it went straight in with no trouble altough…..

i have tested the motor out of engine and it spins, put it back in and wired it up with ignition. when i pushed start the first time i got more of a clunk but now get the solonoid clunking each time i push start, my freind tells me that when i hold start down it humms as if its trying to do some thing.

Not sure if engine is seazed altough it did turn over in gear when rolling of backwards from the trailer, but one other thing i noticed is that the starter is very much smaller than the mk1 starter, is it possible i have got a 1.1/small engine starter motor and its not big enough/powerfull to do the mk1 1.8 ???

Just been into look again, thought of something!!!
The battery which i picked up as a spare from some one is :-
12V 36Ah 300A

??? Is the Ah enough i have just read another thread and im thinking i aint got a big enough battery now!
