just one or two electrical faults
Ok, thought I'd check out the electrics yesterday because the gear linkage wouldn't go on and I needed a break from bodywork!
found that:-
No indicators (the dash light is the only thing that comes on)…relay?
also hazard lights do didly squat!
the windscreen wipers don't come on… here this odd sound, so I'm thinking relay also? although the washer pump works..yay
can anyone shed some light on which relay's these would be as the haynes manual is as helpful as a chocolate firegaurd when it comes to the relay layout.. pics would be handy showing what relay does what
If it makes a difference it's an '82 1.6 GTI (for those that don't know  )
On the plus side though I might have it running this afternoon… but we shall see

Might be relays but might not be in both cases!
If the indicators work, the hazards will, they linked in this complicated mess that VW obviously thought was clever! Check the switches them selves, give them a clean with some switch lube. The fact that the dash indicator is flashing suggests that the relay is actually working - You'll here it clicking quite loudly if it is.
As for the wipers, Check the stlk switch, these can be quite tempremental and may need the contacts cleaning up. Also, try disconnecting the arm from the actual motor and see if the motor spins on it's own - the spindles that go through the scuttle can corrode and seize…
Good luck with getting it running today!

sorry Al, the dash light when I try the indicator is perminantly on and there's no clicking
when I turn the wiper's on on relay clicks but it sounds like a bottle top click rather than a relay.
cheers Hairy, looks about right, not sure about the 3 fuses below the line of fuses, can't recall seeing those, any idea what number relay is for the indicator's and wiper?
my only concern is water damage, when it was under my home made shelter there was some rain that would have possibly got into the fuse box, still looks like new though

Phil,
3 fuses along the bottom are spares and not connected to anything
Indicators - most likely relay - position 12 - also does hazards - no21 printed on relay
Wipers - I think the relay only runs the intermittant bit - full on wipers are direct to the motor - I'd suspect seized spindles - relay postion 10 no19 printed on relay

I'd imagine No12 manages both Hazards and Indicators.
The washwipe interval one, No10, we don't have interval adjustment so I think it would probably be here?!?

Doesn't the 1600 GTI have the earlier style 15 fuse fusebox? The diagram is for a 22 fuse fusebox that 1800 GTI's have, is the relay layout the same :dontknow:

still no indicators so I'm going to check all the bulbs, all the fuses look ok
also, think the wiper motor is fried, replaced that relay to and got a funny smell from it (the motor), so I'm going to strip it and take a look once a few others bits are taken care of.
Hairy, FYI that relay diagram isn't the same as what I have .. the relay positions are labeled alphabetically and there's not that many.

Phill - they changed the fusebox about 1982. Think 1600 GTI will have the earlier style box which has 15 fuses. The diagram appears to be for a 1800 GTI which has 22 fuses - Haynes helpfully only carries the later fusebox diagram. Sorry don't diagram for 1600.
