Non starting diesel

Post

Have a 1588cc jk diesel engine, it'll fire, chug abit at very low revs and wont pick up then cuts out.  Its been stood a while and it has had fresh fuel and filter and filled the system through with fresh fuel. It has a bosch pump.  It has been stood a while and previously ran ok.  Could anyone offer any advice to a diesel noob please?

In many cases a vehicle like this needs a darned good towing! Have got many diesel cars to run this way and once they have warmed up they tend to behave next time you start as long as you don't leave it too long again.
Please avoid `Coldstart` and others like it, they will destroy your engine if used regularly.
Good luck!

2 tintops.
3 cabbies, 1 with G60 power, just for fun.
Volvo T5, just for fun.
3.1Ltr V6 Dutton Leggera, just for fun.
Renault 5 GT Turbo, just a money pit!
Several boring cars, just no fun!

Hi,

if it starts and runs on all four cylinders before cutting out the problem is surely air in the lines, I would think. The Bosch pump seems to bleed itself easily, so it just needs to run for longer.

Hi,  just had the same issues on the caddy, been sat in a barn for 4 years, we had a right tussle to get it to run but got there in the end, initially it wouldn't pull fuel from the tank, checked all the fuel lines were clear and purged any air bubbles out and it would run for a short while then die, managed to get it running by feeding it with a coke bottle full of diesel hanging above the pump on the bonnet, see if it'll run with that plumbed straight into the pump with a length of fuel hose (bypass the filter) if it runs better like that then it could be the pump suction side is gunged up after sitting for so long or you're drawing air in somewhere, also check glow plugs are all good and starter is turning over nice and quick, when we got it back on the road it was still slightly underpowered at full revs but after doing a few miles it picked up and cleared itself through, happy days now and running sweet, good luck

Success!

I went over it all again checking for anything like air leaks, removed and blew through the metail injector pipes and re bled the system.  Got it running from a can and let it warm up and reconnected the line back to the filter and it now rattles away nicely.  Thanks for your help.

That's good news. My 1.5D is proving difficult to start with the colder weather. It's always been a bit laborious, but I've noticed the glowplug wires are getting hot and the battery cables too. I guess I'd better clean up some connections and replace some wires. Battery condition is essential too.

Ok, a little more advice if I may.  Now I have brakes I am able to drive it.  It idles a treat and picks up ok while stationary.  However, when it driven its picks up ok in first, picks up eventually in 2nd but going into third it says jog on.  In reverse it's normal too.  It seems to struggle under increasing load in the longer gears.  What's going on? Are there any other filters (except the big one in the bay) in the system that may need looking at or any other suggestions?

Ok Ill have a look in there, no back seats in a pick up tho, must be another access I guess/hope, i'll have a look.  There is barely any smoke at all, there is a a slight hint of it as you rev but that's pretty normal isnt it?
