Pirelli p caps

I’m cleaning up a set of p slots, I was going to get them painted but since I’ve been sanding them I’m leaning towards polishing them instead . But I’ve no idea what color to use on the caps to match the wheels. Any thoughts folks

I think whatever colour you paint the centres it will look a bit odd with the wheels themselves polished…… You can get chrome paint but I don't think it'd be easy enough to match the finish.

Personally I would have them painted or powder coated in silver then get the centres painted to match. Make sure the centres are properly prepped though or it can be a bit of a nightmare.

Whatever you decide to do let us know how you get on.

good luck  :)

LOL been there a time or two.

Once I was driving back from my Parents to New Orleans.  When I got to Memphis, I was stuck in Bumper to bumper traffic for 6-7 hours… as I was driving down the roads, there was nothing but Elvis Playing on the Radio…. Then there were Stands on the side walks saying Locks of Elvis Hair, Rectal Thermometers once used by the king…..ervery one hawking everything.  Then 5 minutes later, I saw the gates of Graceland…….

It was the first anniversary of his death….And I just had to take Highway 51….. instead of the bypass…..

This is one of the rims I did with 800 grit disc , the scratches are almost gone from the rougher paper, although the rim looks a bit (dirtier) what should I be cleaning the rims with in between changing to finer paper? Note all the sanding has been done without water, just dry sanding

3/4 of the way through with 1500 , getting late do I had to stop, school night . Too noisy, still unsure of what to use to clean these between sanding?

Just look at the really old episode of Wheeler Dealers on the MK1 GTI to see what Polished P wheels with black caps look like. You can get it on you tube I think still.

Hot soapy water, as the less you have on the metal the better off you are on the next round of grit.

If you are going to be any longer than a few days as in a month or so, then I would do a thin hit of oil….. once they are cleaned and polished they usually stay shiny for months…. so actually you don't need anything as they will dull a little, but the next grit will wipe that out.

"School Night" Dang, you remind me of my youth… Rebuilding a 58 AH Sprite MK1, and a 67 MG Midget…..
Spent all my time working, on the Car, Working at a Grocery Store for 1.05 and hour, and doing homework….
Took a lot of ribbing for having half of 2 cars in my basement……but the first day of Senior year Driving my MG to School….It all Stopped.  So press on….

got down to 1500 grit with the four wheels, do I need to go finer? Also I bought one of those Frost kits back in the day , but I can’t remember what color compound is for the finest finish . There’s blue , brown, pink . Which is finer? Also I roughly painted the caps . Which to go for black or silver?

The pidgin? Seemingly my post was used three times? But it wasn’t? But if you insert a pic of a pidgeon into your next post, every thing is cool . WTH

I thought the pigeon was for buffing a final sheen finish.
Hold it breast down and in a clockwise motion apply pressure going with the feathers until desired finish is achieved.

Replace pigeon as an when necessary, available everywhere! ;)

OH THE INHUMANITY OF TREATING BIRDIES THAT WAY ……. oh how insensitive….. Birds (including pigeons have rights…..   After all I am a founding member of PETA)….. People eating Tasty Animals….

:)

I love the fact that in Chicago, and places have re-introduced Falcons (Atlanta as well) Downtown, and the population of pigeons is held in check….

I like pigeons as much as I do Tree-Rats…. which with potatoes, carrots, and peas makes a lovely stew.

There is another way if you fancy a little bit of fabrication and gluing shenanigans?

Get some of the chrome hub caps from the steel wheels.
Glue / stick the centre caps you have into the back of said chrome hub caps, after trimming them down a bit.

Eh Voila, chrome centre caps in your polished P-slots.

Thanks folks , I’m going with the black caps I think just to simplify things . I’m trying to get the car back to standard looking before I sell it on I have a final go with the compound tomorrow. Not sure which is for final polishing pink or blue compound? Any idea folks?

Pink seems to be intermediate and blue for final.

It does depend on the manufacturer though.

I'd try the blue and see how you go with it first. You need a loose leaf or felt buffing wheel for the final finishing pass.

don't forget about some good protection after as well. I use Meguirs Metal polish (as it's non scratch and protects rather than poilishes  http://www.meguiars.co.uk/shop/nxt-metal-polysh ) followed by Poor boys wheel sealant (  https://www.carparts4less.co.uk/cp4l/p/-/-/-/-/?552999230&0&cc5_111&gclid=Cj0KCQiA5t7UBRDaARIsAOreQtgfDS3BmNidAUrlvV7aVO9O4ZAoyUYhQtsVNdQAEQ27K-XfjqFV_yoaAlfDEALw_wcB )

Two coats of each and you'll be sorted. For the love of all things holy stay away from the metal polish in a toothpaste tube!

It scratches the hell put of everything!

I'll probably go down the same polishing route with mine.
Fortunately mine are a set of the 8 slot p''s so they have metal centre caps that can be polished too.

They do look the part with black centres too.
