Metal plating advice needed

Post

After seeing a few beautiful engine bays ive taken it upon myself to remove a load of bits for degreasing and spraying/refurbing to polish up and clean the engine bay etc. A load of parts as expected are rusted or tarnished/dulled so i fancy zinc plating stuff or similar to bring it all back factory fresh.

So

1. Does anyone recommend any good kits to zinc plate at home.
2. Is zinc plating corrosive resistant enough for an engine bag or is another type better like yellow zinc coating or blackening etc?
3. Alternator etc, once grit blasted can i just laquer it to keep looking more like the orginial finish.

A few questions but any help is appreciated

Regards plating its easier to bag it all up and take it to proffesional. It takes some practise and time to set up and th eamount the pros charge its just not worth it.

Get your aluminium parts vapour blasted for a satin finish. Personally i have never laquared ali as paint doesn't stick to it long term without an etch primer and it will look worse when half of it peels off. Better off just leaving it to the elements with regular coatings of WD40 or another form of corrosion inhibitor. Your zinc parts the same. better off with an inhibitor.

Thanks for the reply Yomp. I ended up ordering a set in the end lol. I do have a plating place nearby but it was a months lead time on it then the time to get plated so i chose to keep myself busy and learn a new skill if i can whilst all of this Covid is lingering about.
Who knows it my keep me sane and busy if the pubs stay closed longer haha.
Luckly i have a tonne of old metal i can plate to practice on first and a shot blaster at work to prep it but thanks for the advice. The aluminium is one thing that i feel is hard to keep looking oem without just leaving it to the elements. Sprayed some bits that look good but time will tell.

I'm with Yomp on this. I bought the kit to do mine at home, but after realising how much effort is required to get good finish, I took most of my bits to local plater.

Same for aluminium bits, I left gearbox and head in raw finish.

Yeah it takes some work but after a good few goes now i just wait until i have a good batch worth doing and then realised its all in the prep work. Wire wheel everything to death and then a little rub of fine wet and dry then wash it and it comes out great.
Specialist will be able to do a much nicer finish but i cant be going down there every other week with a slack handfull of bits, but each to their own i guess
