A bit of a daft question but how are the Karmann badges fixed? Are they glued or clipped in?
I just wanted to double check before attempting to pry them off!
If they are indeed glued on then what would people recommend for affixing them back on?

Hi mine were held on with double sided tape the they came of fine with a slow approach.

Ok, so if they're taped/stuck on then a little heat and gentle gentle should work.
What tape would or have people used since to stick these back on, it's obviously pretty heavy duty stuff if the originals are still stuck on steadfast 25 years down the line!

I used a cloth and plastic flat spatula type thing to get them off, any good double sided tape to stick back on should be fine, but I put masking tape round the outside of old ones so I knew where they went back on, also the key is just to make sure you can cleaned panel with panel wipes so there is no wax or product on panel that wont allow the tape to stick properly :-)

Why remove them?
If the car is being painted then yes remove them but if you are tidying up the badge leave it on the car as it can be done on the car.
I used a sliver model pen to go over mine took 10 minutes to dry and job done.
I used a pen like this. Lots on ebay search "silver paint pen" or model shops, art shops etc….

Mainly because they have been off before at some point and one is on wonky. I've now taken them off and might leave it like this for the moment as fitted some GTI indicator blanks and it looked a bit cluttered with these and the Karmann badges.mark1gls said

Also good tip with the pen, bought one tuther week and have since refurbed all badges with this, pretty impressed with the quality of the finish considering it's just a marker pen!

You're right, they're needed to pass an MOT for cars registered from 1986 onwards, mines an '89 GTI. It does depend a little on the MOT station as to whether you pass or not, i've passed before when I had them on an old mk2 GTI of mine.
I've taped the bulbs holders to the back of the badges so it's easy enough to put the indicators back on for MOT time to avoid any potential issue.
