I'd use neither on a car.
Both are rubbish!

Hammerite smooth finish is good. Not sure with above post. A friend of mine went down at 2ltr abf conversion on his mk2 golf 8v and when the engine was out he decided to paint it. First he cleaned it all up and bought good quality high temp engine paint. 4 coats later in red and you could still see through the paint. Not very impressed at all. In a moment of desperation he picked up some smooth Hammerite and after scraping he block painted it with a brush. One coat and it looked smart and 6 years later it still looks smart.
I have just painted my callipers and carriers the same was and covered it a treat.
Everyone is different and unless your stripping and either anodising or powder coating this is a good way as long as you prep correctly

I used THIS and it gives a nice finish. Available in other colours too.

will check those out, thanks.
Just one more thing, with hammerite, if you paint 1 coat is it easy to smooth out with wet and dry after its hardened and dried?
thanks

Why would you want to do that to a top coat of hammershite?
Its a bodge paint to cover rusty iron railings!

just wanted to know if it can be smoothed out or not, most my parts are going to be powder coated but some i will have to paint. hence wanted to know how good of a finish i can get if need be, as i dont have a compressor and dont want to be buying several spray cans for the sake of it.

The diffenence is in the finish, smooth is smooth and hammered is pitted like its been hit with a hammer hence the name. I have had a look at the datasheet for you and the only issue you may have is with the temperature. Hammerite it limited to 80 degree continuous exposure and may fade if over 50 degree. So not ideal for an engine block but should be fine for other components.
I used Watco Rust Stop paint on lots of parts and its worked very well. They also do a great product called Primebase which is a strong rust convertor to put on first.

Been using hammerite since the 70,s and while it lasts if bodging/painting a rusty old piece of metal, as soon as its used to protect a new/shiny piece it dosnt seem to last however the metal is prepped.
