Cabby roof?
Hey guys,
Dont know if this is the right place to post, so sorry if not.
Recently I bought a mk1 golf, however, It was sat for about a year… The roof has a lot of green marks (from trees I guess) which have stained the roof.
I have tried cabriolet cleaner, but it hasn't really touched it.
Has anyone got any handy tips or ideas?
Many thanks
Steve

303 convertible top cleaner or Renovo soft top cleaner
Or its been suggested on here using uPVC cleaner for vinyl, which works very well. Personally I've tried Renovo and the uPVC. Going to try 303 next.

I would get some p21s total auto wash on the job,or r222 total auto wash as its now called. Its a multi purpose citrus de greaser, this stuff is expensive but can be used on any aspect of your car.You will also need a nail brush (hair bristled) not plastic and access to a pressure washer is a big plus.Dilute the de greaser at least 3/1 and identify the really problematic areas, spray some solution on the worst of it and let it stand for 15/20 mins. Now wet the hood slightly and spray some solution over the entire roof, its a good idea to mask up any rubbers you dont want them sitting in de greaser for ages.Again let that stand for a few mins then gently pressure wash the hood.Re apply more solution and its time to get busy with the brush, wear gloves if your not a fan of dry skin!.Brush the surface lightly with apposing strokes at 90 degres to each other over the entire hood and rinse the hood out.Watch for the colour of the water coming out to indicate if more cleaning is req! you will prob need to repeat this process a few times. Its a good idea to let the hood dry to see how its worked,if its not 100% just go at it again.Remember to let the brush do the work dont get to aggressive with it or the pressure washer!Once your happy with the result de fluff the hood and seal it with a waterproofing agent. If its still manky you will need to re colour the hood or just replace it,hope this helps

Soapy water, lux flakes, soft bristled brush, hose pipe, Milton sterilizing fluid, Once clean and dry apply Ragg topp,
http://www.theultimatefinish.co.uk/raggtopp.aspx?gclid=CO_L3KfXxLICFQMMfAodKjgAVg
this is approved by Harrtz the material manufacturer. Do not use tent water proofer as this will attack any solvents used in the hood manufacture.

save your money.goto asda tesco etc,buy a bottle of cheap white vinegar, put some in a spray bottle.spray the roof all over let it soak in for 10 mins.
now get some cheap all purpose cleaner.
29p in tesco is fine ,flash is better.
mix this with hot water spray on roof,,,aggitate with a stiff scrubbing tye brush, actually a good brush for roofs is one you would use to scraub your back in the shower,,no joke.
scrab roof and you will see the green mould and gunk running out.
repeat a few times with the vinegar
wash off then wash the roof with car wash rinse ,dry roof.
dry car and best to give the car a wax as the vinegar and apc tends to strip wax.
when cars dry and you know the cars gonna stay dry for 2 days then you can treat the roof with the likes of grangers awning proofer or fabsil, both in halfords for around 10 quid… put the fabsil in a spray bottle spray innitially all over roof,,any drips on glass body work remove with glass cleaner.
now put some fabsil proofer stuff into a dish apply with a sponge, type for doing pots n pans are great, dont use the rough green side.
apply the proofer all over roof do a square section say 12"x12" at a time once the roofs well and evenly coated go over it again ,let it dry for several hours or over nights,
repeat with another 2 coats
let it dry do not get the car damp or wet untill the cars had at least 24 hours to dry
now after a few days when it rains the roof will bead the green shouldnt come back as the vinegar has killed the mould
the proofing should last months i find mine lasts around 4 months but the cars outside 24 7 in all weathers.
the proofing will also make the roof look darker.
so instead of spending 50 quid on renevo you will have spent what 13 14 quid tops.
this works ive had my cabrio for years and have tried most of the so called high end products and my way works…..you dont have to re proof but it does make the car look better and does help with the green mould.
hope this helps

Hi
I found a diluted amount of Jeyes fluid put on with a new paintbrush and left for a few days will kill the algae…. It also may not be good for the stitching thread and fabric if applied undiluted but it does shifts the green growth. A good scrub and repeat a couple of times works a treat…it's like spraying Jeyes fluid on panel fencing in the garden in spring to kill off all that green slime algae…
Good luck…
