Input appreciated on some pricing/costs please

I think i've found the right place for some advice. I used to have a black 1981 W reg 1600cc GTi but regret selling it some 10 years or so ago. It was a good one with only 65000 miles at the time. It's reg was CSX 991W if anyone knows anything of it..?  It went north of Edinburgh.

Anyway, I would quite like another.  I approached owners of an A reg Black GTi in Edinburgh a few years ago, car lying in their garden unused for years. They said not selling it as their grand daughter wouldn't let them. I had explained selling a black one and would've liked another. I'm thinking of making another approach, my thinking being is it now probably worth a pretty decent sum in it's current condition so in turn hoping that could tempt them.

So, the car is an A reg, not a Campaign, black, think it was 117k on clock, no sunroof, white damp spots on seats, torn bolster on drivers seat. It's not lovely but outer body looks (from what you can see..) pretty solid with original grey stripes on body.  It's striking me as a full restoration but I like the idea of tackling it myself.

I'd obviously need to try and check the underbody out a bit but on the assumption it's reasonable, what would a car like this be worth? Is it potentially worth more than £2000 or does that sound about right, or if anything, would that be a good offer? The other thing I would like to ask is re total restoration. Any advice on total costs and does a complete strip down and dip of the shell sound like a plan? What is the best way of achieving the best end value and what value would that be just now, £7-8k?

I'm just after some confirmation and thoughts from those currently involved in them. Many thanks
