Buying a MK1 Golf GTI

I've been in the background for a couple of years now considering all things MK1 Golf GTI. I've considered projects, really rough cars and even considered buying one off eBay. 

Thanks to this forum, and after speaking with RetroShack I've steered away from a lot of things because it seems much more sensible to try and buy something that's been looked after rather than buy something that needs a bare metal job.

With all of this said I'm finding it incredibly difficult to find anything that seems straight and that also has bit of history. I'm asking you lovely fellow members for some help really. I've got a healthy budget but cannot find anything as it's a bit of a mine field.

If you can provide any advice or suggestions then I would be really grateful, including anyone who might know of anyone selling something's as I would prefer to buy from a fellow club member.
