Clarification about changes to a Car for the Standard Category
Having relocated from Hampshire to West Sussex in 2021, the drive distance to the AGM show this year was longer and meant that I had to negotiate the M25 rather than previous years via A34 / M40 from Hampshire where I could just make the rally on Saturday.
I stayed overnight with family in Thame near Oxford on the Friday night so that I could leave early to get the the showdown for the rally on Saturday and also attend the AGM and drivers meet. Very comfortable and no rushing.
However, my experience on the M25 on the Friday was quite hard work, yes, my car can cruise at 70 but the constant changing gear and braking, sometimes to a stop, from the M25 south to the north hard work with the standard 80's Golf 1.5 GL braking system. i.e. Standard 239 x 12 Front Discs, 8" Servo and 20mm Master Cylinder.
So on my return journey home Sunday, I decided to miss the M25 and go via my previous Hampshire route down to the M27 and then left to West Sussex for a more comfortable but longer drive.
So to keep up with modern traffic, I have decided o make some changes to the braking system alone to improve the its efficiency, but still maintain the external / internal look of the car, i.e. steel wheels / chrome centers, etc.
Its been 10 years since my original restoration, so I have procured the following new and second hand items:
New, 239 x 20 Vented Discs and associated disc pads to fit my current VWII calipers.
New, 22mm master cylinder and associated pipework maintaining system route and pressure monitoring.
9" vacuum servo, to be restored.
I have recently registered my car as historic with the DVLA, which means cars 40 years old with no "substantial" changes have been made made in 30 years.
There are Acceptable Changes that can be made:
They do not count as a 'substantial change' if:
1. Changes are made to preserve a vehicle because the original type parts are no longer reasonably available.
2. They are changes of a type which can be demonstrated to have been made when vehicles of the type were in production or within 10 years of the end of production.
3. Axles and running gear have been changed to improve efficiency, safety or environmental performance.
4. Changes were made to vehicles that were previously used as commercial vehicles, and you can prove the changes were made when the vehicle was used commercially.
Can I assume that the Mk1 Owners Club / committee members will accept my proposed modifications in line with the DVLA historic vehicles third criteria above and still be allowed to enter future Standard Class Show and shines?
Apologies if this has been discussed or defined before, I haven't been able to locate anything.
Regards

My 'standard' cabby has the same.
When judging someone else's car who professed to the 100% standard - but had obvious modifications, that's a different matter in my opinion. If they're declared then no issue.
