Hi there, have you got recommendations for a particular crankshaft pulley holding tool? I've looked online but no examples of ones specific to the MK1 golf can be found.

I never have needed one. If I was torquing the bolts, or un-torqueing them I usually used one Allen wrench on one of the other bolts to hold it fast while I loosened the other ones with my ratcheting allen. I do have the long shafted Allens.
What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Thank you Briano, I was talking about the main crank bolt as opposed to the Allan bolts.
Any suggestions?

Oh that is easier. Unless your Previous owner did to mine.
There are 2 styles of bolts a hex bolt and a 12pt bolt.
Both are torqued differently.
Do not put 110lbs of torque on a 12pt bolt.
it only takes 60
The Hex or 6 sides takes the 110.
Putting 110lbs on the 12pt bolt drives it in to the end of the machining and bends it. Which required about 400lbs of torque at the machine shop to remove, and in the process it destroyed the Crank.
Sorry for the blurry pics, but that was a 1mp camera.
Oh, the easiest way I have found is a Pneumatic or Electric Impact. In the old days I used a couple of extensions and a long breaker bar, with a screw driver in the vents of the Rotor against the caliper, car in gear.
Another way is the breaker bar jammed on the floor and bump the starter a wee bit.

Hi thank you both for your advice.
Is the 12 point crank bolt compatible with a DX engine, tintop?
Imagine will be a damn sight easier to torque up than a 6 point.

Probably, but it could be too long, go back with the OEM.
