Price of 1.1 rolling chassis

Stumbled across a 1.1 rolling chassis with a donor VR6 car and a half fitted VR6 engine. Body work would need a respray but only small patches of surface rust. No interior only some odd bits of dash board and the two front seats. I was just wondering what anyone thinks to a VR6 in a Mk1 and also rough value for a little offer to the owner? Thanks

The VR6 is a big heavy engine and can upset the balance of the Mk1 with all that weight in the front.
Engine sound great though.. sorry can help with value but an unfinished project is a nightmare finding parts or bits that are missing as Mk1 spares are getting expensive now….

Do wish people would stop picking on poor little innocent 1100 Golfs. Sounds like it was originally a sound tidy car and 100x more rare than a GTI or even a modified Golf.

Know you didn't start the conversion and hope you can now do something that at least gets it back onto the road in some shape or form

Yeah I know what you mean. Everyone wants the GTI, not sure if anything original is still there. Plenty in the barn with it but not sure what else.

I paid £500 (i think) for my 1.1 shell. Like the one you're looking at it had no engine or interior to speak of. it also looked solid.

Turned out it wasn't as good as I'd hoped but still pretty good.

It's basically worth what you're willing to pay.

You'll be at least 4k into it assuming you do all the work yourself and buy second bits as much as possible and paint it yourself.

And then it'll be a modified golf and the values aren't massive on them unless someone wants exactly what you've done. You won't see much or indeed, any profit out of it.

If you want to build something cool for yourself then crack on! I did.

Check out the Mynx thread if you want some odd inspiration.

The issue that I see is three-fold.  One verify that the VIN actually decodes as a GTI, as there are a lot of Pseudo "GTI's"  I have seen over here that were made from getting the Bits out of a wrecking yard, as the Vin on one decoded as a 1983 Golf/Rabbit Diesel LS, but it was listed as a "GTI".

Second is that you are buying a project car that the owner either ran out of funds for, lost interest, or is clearing room, so he wants to re-coup.

As it is a Project-in-works, be pre-paired for shoddy work, incomplete wiring looms, possibly even an engine re-do.  "A VR-6" . seems like a lot of work….and bits to acquire…Then it is a Project, so what is the Time frame that you expect to be done with it..

All things to be considered, and yes knowing when to Run-Awayyyyyyyyyy and not get Trigger-Happy…
There is some underlying reason it is being offered, and you need to sort out the BS from the truth.  :)

My thoughts.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Thanks for the replies. It's been in a barn for about 15 years I'd guess and I think just been forgotten and got bored of. This is the stamp on the front panel of it means anything?
