Long drive in the Golf tomorrow!

Post

The missis is away for the weekend so I'm off to my sisters tomorrow in the Golf. I live in Wiltshire, she lives in Hertfordshire so it's a 220 mile round trip with lots of motorway! The wife thinks I'm mad, I'm looking forward to it…. sort of!
It's the longest drive I'll have taken it on so if you hear reports of a broken down MK1 on the motorway it's probably me O_o!
It's already done 143K so what's another 210 miles, right?

Good luck, you won't need it. The car will be fine

Thanks for the support guys, I'm sure it will be fine! I did 120 miles in it a couple of weeks ago but it was all local mileage. The long run will do it good.
Just a bit of external validation was required 😉!

I often use mine to visit my mother, from South Yorks to East Lancs around 150 miles M1, M62, M66. Compared to a modern Diesel the Golfs are a bit noisy at M-Way speeds but both keep up with traffic fine and average @40mpg. 203,000 miles on the GTI and counting.

Sometimes in summer if Mrs Early is with me we go cross country via somewhere like Hebden Bridge stopping off for a mosey round and coffee and cake.

Well I think nothing of doing 500 Km's in a day in my Cabrio.
I do all the basic checks and off I go. Before the return trip I check again.

It's never let me down, no doubt one day it will but I'll deal with that as and it happens! 👍

Have a great trip. 😉👌

Well, the car breezed it! A steady 70mph all the way there and back and the econmeter says I was getting over 40mpg most of the time (the mfa display says 99.9 mpg, which is a job for another day!)! It's fairly quiet at motorway speed, is quite comfortable  and sits on the road nicely.
Not sure what I was worried about really but the hurdle is out of the way now and I have no worries about taking it on a few more longer journeys!

That's the way to do it, build up a bit of confidence in the car and away you go.

See you in Austria 🇦🇹 next summer! 😉👍

I remember the days when you used to see lots of Mk1s hammering up and down the motorway, they are happy to sit at motorway speeds.
You can get them a bit quieter inside by fitting newer and better sound proofing, some of it you can fit underneath the stuff you already have in the car so help keep the noise down.
You may find there is no sound proofing in the rear foot wells, underneath the seat seats and into the boot?
Maybe a winter project for you?

My Mk1 Scirocco getting an extra layer.

I know we're off subject a little Mark but do you stick it down somewhere or just lay it like that and put the carpet back on it?

Maybe for another post but I'm sure like me, other members would be interested in the best way to do it! 🤔 😉 👍

Well done - bravery wins!

I had a from new 1600 5spd Mk1 back in the day, and I remember it's most comfortable cruising speed was almost exactly 105 - which I did all over uk & Europe. Never got nicked (close a few times!) - aaah those were the days!

i am just about to return to the fold - more soon I hope - but I also have 3 old triumphs (spit, vitesse & Stag), and an old grey Fergy tractor. The only thing that ALWAYS works properly is the workhorse Fergy, rarely gets serviced, out in all weathers, up to its neck in sh**, and around 20 years older than the oldest triumph. Yet I wouldn't think twice of working him for several hours on end, and expect not a hiccup. Not fair compared to all the mollycoddling the Triumphs get!

A trip to Austria heh, I quite fancy that! I'll just have to convince the wife, which wouldn't normally be a problem but taking her in the Golf will take some convincing! I'm sure the car is good for it though!

Funnily enough, it is a job that was already on my winter list of less important jobs!

Good luck in your search for a MK1, somewhat different to the Triumphs but at least you won't need to worry about a Golf overheating like that Stag  ;) !
