I was a little disappointed to find VW want 130euro for a certificate and data sheet. Mercedes provided them free of charge for my SLK320 and also included all the service history that had been undertaken at their dealerships.

The thing I have noticed is that companies who reply via a customer service department are almost always free but if it comes from a heritage or classics department there is always a charge. One company who went bust used to charge £130 but after the archives were bought by a heritage company the charge went to £320. Are enthusiasts being viewed as another source of revenue rather than being supported for loyalty.

I'm old enough to have many cars and projects and it's interesting how the different companies charge for these items. In the past the following companies have provided the information free of charge:
Mercedes
Porsche
Jaguar
BMW
