Alternatively you could consult the chart in the owners and/or service manual (I would post it but I am currently away from home) with grades of oil vs temperature and experiment to find which best suits your cars needs.

Not on a engine that has been run on Dino oil, you can but expect oil leaks once the old oil is cleaned up a bit.
Usually after your 3 or 4th oil change running synth.
I have used 10w40 or 20w50 Castrol in all my 4 bangers since the 70's, the only exception was my Diesel Rabbit that I ran 10w30….
If it was a new or rebuilt engine will all new seals everywhere, then Synth would be ok,,,, but don't change mix in the middle of life….
