Cabriolet Model Help!

Post

image1-6.JPG Hi,

I am seeking clarification on the specific model of my 87' GTI Cabriolet. It is a November 87' vehicle and when it was first purchased by my family it has a pretty awful aftermarket "big bumper" kit fitted. I have no removed this kit and I plan on replacing it with either the Clipper kit (which I have already) or with the (what I believe to be) original colour coded plastic bumpers/arches/front spoiler. Am I correct in my assumption that this vehicle would have had the colour coded bumpers fitted originally? There are also 2 stripes along each side of the vehicle, are these original as I have never seen another with them (see photos below).

Many thanks in advance.

'87 was a changeover year. My 87 Cabrio paperwork says clipper but it doesn't have the big bumpers and side skirt clipper kit. Some say that the advertising dept prempted the manufacturing before the clipper kits were ready.

The side stripes are almost certainly DIY added.

There are detail changes to the bodywork between small and big bumpers, someone withy more knowledge than me will be able to define what they are so you could tell which yours should be. However seeing as someone added big bumpers it started as a smaller bumper model, or why else would they replace big bumper with other big bumpers but to try and make it look like the latest version?

Special edition "Quartet" models had colour coded small bumpers but apart from those I think all small bumpers were black/grey.

Thanks for the reply Early-1800.

I was aware that 87' was the last of the small bumpers but I didn't realise how difficult it would be to try and find exactly what mine should have had fitted from the factory. It's good to know that those side stickers are aftermarket though.

Worst case I can fit the Clipper kit but ideally I would like to keep it a little more original. I have a gut feeling it would have had the white bumpers but these seem ridiculously difficult to source!

I guess VW would of just painted the bumpers white, so why not get some black ones and get them painted?
I t may be easier than trying to source some white ones?
