Maidstone is the main office for the Kent area. I think the last letter denotes what region it was sold in, my Golf was purchased in Broadstairs, I did have another car many moons ago that was EKE and I'm sure that was registered in the Thanet area aswell.

I know JC Morrison were the Thanet dealers In Broadstairs, Canterbury would of had a dealership and Dover and Ashford aswell.
When I do eventually find it I will post it up.

If there's any other towns nearby that might've had a VW dealer let me know and I'll check.
All the UK dealers of the time are shown, but they're listed alphabetically and I'm not familiar with that part of the world!

Here's the dealers for Kent:-
Whitehouse Bexley.
JC Morrison Broadstairs.
Westmoreland Service Station Bromley.
EuroCanterbury.
EuroCharing.
Hollis Motors Dover.
Hollis Motors Folkestone.
Maidstone Car Sales (Gillingham).
Whitehouse Gravesend.
Maidstone Car Sales.
K.J European Ltd Orpington.
JC Morrison Ramsgate.
Rawsons Euro Cars Ltd Tonbridge.
Rawsons Euro Cars Ltd Tonbridge Wells.
Wolfe Garage Westerham.
There's also St George's Garage Cliftonville (not sure when they opened but was pencilled in place of JC Morrison Broadstairs in my booklet)
I also found the service docs for the EKE reg Fiesta I had and that was purchased from Stormont Ford in Tonbridge Wells.
Here's a link to registration areas http://nice-reg.co.uk/info/area-of-issue-codes-for-classic-suffix-and-prefix-number-plates.html

What I think happened was that dealers got allocated random combos of Kent reg plates cos my dad picked a reg from a sheet of say fifty plus all ending in FKL.
Good luck with the search, the previous owner will be listed on your V5 but depending on how many owners the cars had it could be difficult.

Write to the first few owners asking for info, it's a long shot but you never know? Even if you get nothing back it'll be interesting to see the journey the car has made through its life and the whereabouts of the first owner to get an idea of the nearest dealer.
