1.8gti vs 1.6gti

Hi All,

Looking to buy a gti and have previously owned a 1.8gti which I loved, however I would consider a 1.6gti. Since I have never driven nor sat in a 1.6 how do they compare?

Anyone have any preferences of one over the other and for what reasons?

I had both in my youth although the 1.6 was a Jetta GLi but mechanically identical to the golf,my old Jetta flew was very revvy compared to a standard 1.8 although a cam swop cures that,the 1.8 pulls a little better and is easier to modify,TBH either is good fun

The pull is what I loved about my old gti but I imagine a swap from a 1.6 to 1.8 engine would be a simple affair?

The scope for tuning the 1.8 is also more appealing however I might miss the original engine characteristics were I to mess about with it.

Will just keep an eye out until I find one I fall for and go from there

For me i like the 1.8i but im been silly really as the 1.6i goes just as well & im sure on the open road there would be nothing between them
