After many many miles in my current 100% reliable wee mk1 gti I am thinking i need a change as although the mk1 gti is a great car after 7 years of ownership i am thinking of a changing to mk2 16v. Have had mk2 8vs before & the mk1 is a better car in my opining but is it better or just as good as an unmodified mk2 16v.
cheers

Is there something in the water up in Scotland atm?
Hi jellybelly
Not sure what you mean? not really a club seen up here in the highlands plenty mk1s in my neck of woods but no-one is bothered about meeting up unfortunately. I just fancy a change I suppose & the 16v mk2 should also be a bit quicker. Will still go to any mk1 meets in the area especially the meets chris organises hence the possible choice of car. I am mk1 daft & my mk1 gets well used no need for me to fly the flag for a 200mile trouble free round trip as i do aprox 200m every week.

I've been trying to persuade the other half to get rid of her Mk2 Polo and get a Mk2 GTI.

Small bumper Mk2s look nice, I used to have an early 16v in Helios blue. I'm not as keen on the big bumper models for some reason. Here's a pic of my old one…
Hi Gav
Ive only owned a couple of 8v & woudnt sell my mk1 for an 8v, are the 16v as good as they say do they feel as nimble as mk1 with the extra power. I fancy a early 16v running k-jet if possible.

Just massbad is buying one as well as he has sold his s1 wondered if the SNP has put a additive in the water supply making you sell mk1s and buy mk2s instead
Good cars tho
Yeh Chris mentioned he was looking for a mk2 & tbh thats kinda kicked it off as im been thinking of a change for a while now but the good mk1 gti is hard to beat as far as owning a classic car is concerned, so the next best thing is a standard mk2 16v.

How about changing bits of your mk1 so it feels different 😋

I had a big bumper, MK2 16v until last year - I used it for a daily for a while and it was a great car. I love how the MK2 looks too. Here was mine;

That all said, for some reason I liked it as a car to live with and drive, but never really loved it. Whereas I always love being in a MK1. I may be wrong but probably wont have another MK2 for that reason - but who knows!
Drive a few and see what you think

I have only ever had a 1.6 mk2 auto I think it was, so don't really know how a 16v GTI would drive vs a Mk1 GTI.
I would just wait 3 months or so till

Lmao!
I didn't think my 16v felt massively quicker, just different. It's all at the top end I guess being 16 not 8v.

I've got a mk2 syncro that I'm just starting to use and sort out as a bit of winter fun so I tend to notice MK2's about.
Round our way I reckon the ratio is 10:1 ie. I'll see 10 mk2's before I clock a random MK1.
When I'm in the MK2 I just feel like I'm driving an old car.
When I'm in the mk1 I feel like I'm driving a classic car.

Sold the Sportline and after much searching high and low at seriously inflated prices ended up with a monza 16v small bumpered car
Don't get me wrong I love them both but sometimes a change is a good as a rest , in the 20+ years I've been in the vag scene I've never had a time there's not been a mk1 er mk2 In The garage some times one of each .
91Jreg Sportline (now gone) For now 88 Ereg Mk2 16v (monza blue ) (now its gone too)Numerous mk1 tintops I should never have sold 😰 Oh and a TDI Touran as a daily ….latest toy mk5 Gti (showing my age) had to go serious money pit ,now cruising a Caddy Van
