vw recon engine

I have a mk1 gti engine without an engine number, I think it is a vw exchange engine as it has a vw symbol where it would have the engine number.

I'm not a subject expert although I did sell the cars back in the day.

Now I would be very surprised to hear VW supplying engines for any reason without engine numbers.
It just doesn't make sense for a company that is so 'Automated' to do that.

They would still need to be able to track it for example in case of any production problems! ;)

Being a cynical old söd has someone at a much earlier time removed it for some devious reason?

In that method of production it's simply impossible to have one slip through the net without a number as that number is tied to the chassis number etc…

It's just my take on it unless someone else can come up with an alternative. :)

from what i have read I think you could buy engines on an exchange program without the engine number then you could use your old engine number,

bit of info on older engines at bottom of this page

Interesting and I've read the whole article.

Now it's classic VW confusing to say the least but the way I read it is the exchange engine for that period should have been stamped with an "X" I think?

To be honest it's just not clear so I would go on the assumption it is a genuine exchange engine from VW and leave it at that!
