1.3 Driver engine too far gone!

Post

I am looking for a 1.3 engine/ car to do an engine swap with my car. I have been quoted over 7,000 pounds to rebuild this engine as it has now been taken apart! I'm at a bit of a dead end as I can't find any 1.3s online (that are remotely within my price range) or any engines for sale at all. If anyone knows how I could get my hands on one that would be greatly appreciated. Ideally I would buy an engine on its own, but the second best option is to find a run down worse for wear car with a perfect engine (so it's affordable! Any comments, ideas or questions for discussion please let me know!!

When shops quote you a figure like that it is because they don't want the job.

Shop around a wee bit.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Hi Buddy,

Don't dispair!

The Mk1 breadvan polo and coupe had the same engine and then there's the 1.3 fitted in the mk2 Polo and Mk2 Golf that is an even better choice-it has 3 bolts on the top of the rocker cover holding it down.
You could try Mk2 spares (07917400498) Matty. he's very very busy (!) so you might have to try a few times, but he is a good honest guy and has a lot of engines.Based  in Melton Constable Norfolk, check out his website.
I am quite sure he would do you a good deal if he has one.
Marcus.

Thank you so much! Is he reliable? Always a risk with buying an engine… Cheers!

Hi Jack,

I know him well and in my opinion he's an honest good guy.
Yes there's always a risk buying an engine! but he's well respected and I have bought stuff off him for years-without any issues.
he might even have one in a car that you can see running in person or on an video?
I know he also does engine swaps for people but he's probably booked up for months aheaddue to high demand.

Phone him and ask.
Its your choice.

Note: disclaimer :I cannot guarentee it will all work out fine for you !- but I hope he can help you get just what you need as the £7k you were quoted to do up your engine was ridiculous !

PS I have a 1.3 Mk1 too:).

Not sure where you are in the UK, but you could try these guys - https://www.amacengineering.co.uk/
They did my GTi engine, and that was in bits. They did give it back to me in bits, but I wanted the fun of putting it back together. Certainly wasn't 7k!!

I'd agree with the comments made about the wide availability of the 1.3 VW engine, but I'd say that unless you stumble across a low mileage engine, all of them will need some TLC due to age. Think seals, head gasket, valve seals, etc.

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here
