Ola amigos.. hope all is well..
Random question.. going to replace the timing belt on Jules (my car name), already purchased. Spoke to Mark as Classic VW about the water pump.. he said, respectfully, if it's working don't change it… prior to buying it, i spoke to the local garage, who are good guys, & said to change the water pump too.
i'm in 2 minds what to do… do i don't i???

No don't listen to your garage guys as they don't know Mk1 Golf engines.
You only need to replace the water pump if it's faulty, the cam belt does not run the water pump, it's run from the alternator belt.
Its newer cars which have water pumps run by a cam belt and the pumps are usually hidden in the engine and while you have every thing apart to change the cam belt you change the pump if needed.
I've only just replaced my original water pump after 35 years of use.
The only other thing you need to replace at the time of the cam belt is the tensioner.
