There were 449 sportline or thereabouts registered to the UK market. Dated from 90/91 to 93 with a few registered in early 94.
Mixed reports as to how many were black and if it was a 50/50 split etc. in my opinion there were definitely more red than black. I could never get a proper breakdown.
They weren't numbered like say the mk4 anniversary model GTI. But did have a code on the white boot sticker to represent a 'special' model. Have a look…
Congratulations on the two cars btw.

499 was also the number I’ve been led to believe
I really thought there would of been more clarity on the split, I was also led to believe it was 50/50 but A, that doesn’t split into 499 and B, I’m also in agreement that red is more common.
I didn’t start out to get both colours, it just sort of happened
My aim was and still is to get a collection of all my favourite hot hatches again that I owned when I was a kid.
BUT…… two of one model sort of slows that up a bit, obviously due to funds
And it’s not just the sportlines
I’ve got two the same on another flavour too
Here’s a pic of my collection so far for anyone interested, I’ve not got a pic yet with the black sportline with them but will shortly
