Mk1 golf C 1.1 1982

Everything is working fine on the car apart from sometimes when driving I will loose all revs when accelerating then the engine will cut off after about 5 seconds. I thought I had solved this same problem when I first got the car on the road, but it turns out I was just leaving the choke on for too long (I was told leave it on till the engine is up to temperature) which was flooding the engine which would also explain why it took quite some time to get it going again. So by changing how I use the choke fixed this problem up until now.My problem now is that it has happened twice now and in totally different situation, where as before it will happen everytime after 5 - 10 minutes of driving. Its the same problem as before where ill be driving along then go to accelerate and it will rev up to about 1cm of movement on the pedal then not accelerate at all past that point then the engine will die. Both times this has happened I've got out and inspected the engine and all is visably fine, I give everything a wiggle and a look over both when not running and running. When trying to start it back up it will take a fair few attempts with slight pedal pumping once I hear the engine kick into life. But the really confusing part is that the car is fine once it has happened? as in it does'nt happen again for the rest of the day and all is well.So my question is why? has it happened to anyone else? and what the fix is if anybody knows?   Thanks in advance for your time.

Didnt want to read and run.

Have you or anyone adjusted the carb?
Is the carb mount in good condition?

do you have a fuel filter, is it good / clean?

Check over the whole fueling and ignition system in a methodical and logical order! Your suspects are fuel or spark.

Make sure your are getting fuel through to the carb. If not you either have blocked lines or a weak diaphragm in the fuel pump, use compressed air (a foot pump will do!) to blow the lines through. If fuel comes through to the inlet make sure there are no blocks in the carb, clean out the carb and check the jets are clear. Use compressed air and carb cleaner, don't stick anything in the jets.

If you know fuelling is good then check for air leaks, splits in vacuum hoses, base mount gasket from carb to inlet manifold etc. You can check base mount by running the car and spraying around the mount with carb cleaner. if the revs pick up you have an air leak. When the car's running the air leak will increase and cause the mixture to lean out.

Once you've covered off the fueling then if the fault persists you need to go over the ignition system. If your on points and condenser then check the points are clean and the gap is correct. The faults described could be a failing condenser (cheapest) or a failing coil (more expensive).

I had a similar problem a while back with our Polo - the trouble I found was that the fault was intermittent and so when I tested everything it was working fine - I solved it by taking my testing gear in the car and waiting till it failed (Hall sender on Polos electronic ignition was the culprit in my case).

Check the Haynes manual, there will be instructions for testing the condenser and coil in there.

Good luck with it, do it in order and it will be easier to trace

i bought a 1.3 before as non runner, everything appeared ok but the pipe from the pipe from pump to hard line had perished and was drawing air so not pulling the fuel from tank
