Does anyone know roughly how much it costs to get a mk1 5 speed gearbox reconditioned, and is there anywhere local to me ? ( south wales ) cheers.

Mine cost me around the £300 mark and I used a well known company in my area (Sussex). I don't think that was a bad price imo.
