What would happen if you made a take off for the life and connected it to the unused connection on the fan motor??
I.E
Earth - Earth
Live 1 - high speed
Live 2 - low speed
Any ideas? I would test myself but its raining and I dont want to uncover the car
See photo below but with an additional live wire running to the middle contact

If you have a 2 speed switch on the radiator, then using the high setting makes more sense, as you don't want the thing to run low speed, if you are needing to "Cool it down now mode"
I mean I think the single speed fan was running at the "higher" speeds usually.
I wouldn't connect both to the same pin on the radiator switch as it won't run any faster really.
But then again I have never had a non-A/C equipped Golf/Rabbit/Cabriolet ever.
As far as the flakiness of the connection on the motor, that isn't uncommon about the pins…. I have one of my Cabriolets sockets on the Fan connection -Tie-Wrapped to the Fan shroud to ensure that the connections stay tight.
You did see my thread on how to make the Fan Shroud easier to get on and off with a few snips of a tin snip?

I've already taken my fan off, the shroud came off in about 2mins.
Took longer to get the cover off the car
